Senior In Nature
Seniors and their families are encouraged to enjoy Hirundo's Trail of the Senses either on their own or through a guided tour. Hirundo Wildlife Refuge, located in Old Town, Maine, is now scheduling guided senior tours for Summer and Fall. Specially trained docents will lead the tours to provide a friendly welcome and interesting information and to oversee the comfort and safety of the tour participants.
The Trail of the Senses has two loops:
The Meadow Loop goes from the internal parking area through
a patch of woods into a wide-open field where an observation
platform allows for sitting to observe the many swallows and
other birds in flight. The trail loops around through the woods
and back to the parking area. This trail requires about half an
hour at a slow pace to enjoy the setting and the interpretive
displays.
The Pond Trail branches off from an internal access road
leading from the internal parking area. It crosses a small dam
over a stream, and follows the circumference of the pond,
passing by specialized wooded habitats. At the end of the pond,
the trail leads to an observation deck that allows for sitting to
observe the lovely views over the pond. This trail requires about
an hour at a slow pace to enjoy the setting and the interpretive
displays.
Hirundo’s facilities include two outhouses near both loops of the Trail of the Senses, one of which is wheelchair accessible. A cabin by the pond for sitting indoors at a table is available and
has a patio for outdoor seating.
