Hirundo as an Envirothon Training Partner

Hirundo can serve as a hands-on training and preparation partner for Envirothon teams, supporting students as they build field skills, ecological knowledge, and confidence ahead of competition day.

Working with Hirundo helps Envirothon teams immerse themselves in real Maine ecosystems. Students sharpen species identification, data collection, and problem-solving by applying concepts the same way they will during competition—learning from local professionals and gaining experience that goes beyond the classroom.

What we can offer Envirothon teams:

  • Field-based training sessions led by experienced naturalists and biologists

  • Species identification practice (wildlife, birds, insects, tracks & sign)

  • Aquatic ecology and stream investigations using established protocols (e.g., Maine Audubon’s Stream Explorers)

  • Opportunities to practice data collection, analysis, and presentation in relation to Hirundo’s community science projects (skills directly aligned with Envirothon scoring)

  • Flexible support for schoolsOn-site field days at Hirundo and outreach visits to schools or local field sites

How Hirundo aligns with Envirothon topic areas:

  • Wildlife: skulls, pelts, tracks & scat, bird & insect identification, habitat & ecology discussions

  • Aquatic Ecology: stream surveys, macroinvertebrates, water quality, watershed concepts

  • Forestry & Land Use: habitat management, forest structure, human impacts on ecosystems

  • Current Environmental Issues: discussions tied to local examples and hands-on opportunities around ongoing community science projects

Fees

  • Classroom visit: $80/12 students OR $7/student (each additional student is $10)

  • Field visit at Hirundo: $100/12 students  OR $8/student (each additional student is $12)

In-person programs greater than 35 miles from Old Town will incur a surcharge of $25. We are unable to accommodate in-person programs to locations outside of a 65-mile radius of Old Town, Maine. We believe funding should not be a barrier to our programming. If the fees are an issue please let us know and we can discuss a way to work it out, we often trade volunteer hours for programming!
